Book Editing

Pricing

My Philosophy

My first goal, naturally, is to provide great editing that helps make incredible books. But my second goal is to make it affordable.

The average cost of book editing for a full-length novel runs into the thousands. If you land a traditional publishing deal, the publishing house will no doubt supply an editor. But what if you need some professional help getting your story ready to submit to agents, first? And what if you decide to self-publish?

I think your story deserves to be shared—at its best—regardless of your budget.

Pricing Note - Java Dragon Books Editing

Standard Rates

$0.01 – $0.018 per word for line editing or developmental editing individually

$0.015 – $0.025 per word for combined editing services

Example: $800 to $1,600 total for an 80,000 word novel

Editing prices vary slightly since each case is unique. Polished writing takes less time to edit, so your exact price will depend on the condition of your manuscript. Custom editing packages may differ from these starting rates.

Need-Based Discount

My prices are much lower than the average, but I understand that several hundred dollars is still a significant amount for some budgets. If possible, I’d love to work with you even if that price isn’t feasible. That’s why I offer need-based discounts when I’m able. (I’ve got to pay the bills, too!)

Availability of lowered rates is subject to my current project load. Clients paying the normal prices will be given priority. But if I have some extra time on my schedule, I may grant a discount at my discretion. Please understand that for projects with this discount, I typically require more time to complete the project, since I must prioritize full-paying projects. And please be considerate and only request a discounted if you genuinely need it. If you don’t, leave it for writers who do.

We can also discuss other forms of compensation to lower your price. For example, you can help me by writing a testimonial or giving me a shoutout on social media.

How Payment Works

My payment options are flexible. In general, I ask for 50% of the payment up front, and 50% upon completion of the project. But if you need it more spread out, we can discuss an alternative plan, such as four installments of 25% throughout the duration of the project.

I prefer payment through Venmo or Paypal. Other options available if needed.
